Springfield, Ore. – Oregon Medical Laboratories, a Molecular Center of Excellence, announced today that it has completed a molecular research grant that will position OML to be one of the first laboratories in the country to offer advanced testing for HIV.

The grant, from Roche Diagnostics of Indianapolis, Ind., provided OML access to cutting edge molecular diagnostic instrumentation equipment designed to more accurately and quickly detect and monitor HIV-1. OML was one of only four regional reference laboratories in the United States to receive the prestigious grant.

“The grant serves as national recognition of OML’s expertise and continued commitment to state-of-the art molecular diagnostics,” said Glen Hansen, PhD, Director of OML’s Molecular Laboratory.

The technology studied monitors HIV-1 viral replication and quantitates the virus present in patient samples over a much wider range than has been previously been available to physicians. The fully automated technology delivers highly accurate results faster – a decisive advantage for doctors monitoring how well a chosen therapy is working for the patient.

In addition, Hansen says, “As a Molecular Center of Excellence, it is vital for OML to be a leader in the evaluation of diagnostic platforms. The grant has allowed us to further develop our already strong molecular laboratory, ultimately providing the best molecular diagnostic technology to residents of the Northwest.”

“With this important research grant, we are thrilled to enhance our long-standing strategic partnership with Oregon Medical Laboratories,” said Susan Zienowicz, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Roche Diagnostics. “OML is one of the nation’s leading molecular laboratories and its scientific staff continues to remain on the cutting edge of new technology and is recognized as some of the industry’s most prominent molecular thought leaders.”

Zienowicz added, “As a Roche Molecular Center of Excellence, OML is one of only 31 molecular laboratories nationally recognized to receive that distinction. Considering molecular diagnostics is the cutting edge of diagnostics in general, OML is absolutely a leader in the industry.”

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated in 2003 that 1 million Americans were living with HIV/AIDS and that 40,000 become infected each year.

This month, OML presented the findings of the study to a standing-room-only crowd of scientists and clinicians at the International Clinical Virology Symposium in Clearwater Florida.

About Oregon Medical Laboratories
Headquartered in Springfield, Ore., OML is Oregon’s largest medical laboratory, performing more than 7 million tests last year. With laboratory and collection sites throughout the region, OML offers more than 1,000 different medical diagnostic tests, clinical laboratory consultation and drug testing services to thousands of hospitals, physician offices and employers throughout the Pacific Northwest.

OML is one of a select number of laboratories nationwide to earn the Molecular Center of Excellence designation by Roche Diagnostics (a world leader in diagnostics testing). The designation recognizes OML as a laboratory that possesses the expertise, scientific acumen and instruments to perform diagnostic testing on a molecular and genomic level. In addition, OML is one of fewer than 50 labs in the U.S. certified by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Established in 1986, OML has been recognized by Oregon Business magazine as one of the best places to work in Oregon for the last four consecutive years. In addition, OML recently received the prestigious Emerald Award for Job Growth from the Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce.
